MATCH PREVIEW: Ebbsfleet

The Shots look to continue their charge for the playoffs as they welcome in-form Ebbsfleet to the EBB Stadium on Tuesday night.

A huge three points against Oldham on Saturday took the Shots to 5th place, but a quick turnaround sees Tommy Widdrington’s side welcome Ebbsfleet to the EBB Stadium as the Shots go head first into the buisness end of the season.

Founded 78 years ago in 1946, Ebbsfleet are in the midst of their return to the Vanarama National League following relegation from the division in 2019/20. Their return came thanks to an impressive season in the National League South, where they went up comfortably as champions of the division.

LAST TIME OUT

The Shots took on the Fleet in the third gameweek of the season at Stonebridge Road, but came up short against the newly promoted side. Franklin Domi opened the scoring in the first half, and one of the National League’s danger men Dominic Poleon added a second just after the hour. The game ended 2-0 to Ebbsfleet.

The Fleet were also winners on their last National League trip to the EBB Stadium back in 2018. Goals from Michael Cheek and Danny Kedwell in the second half were enough to give Ebbsfleet all the points on their way out of Hampshire.

SINCE WE MET

Ebbsfleet at one point found themselves deep in a relegation battle. When Danny Searle took over on an interim basis at Stonebridge Road the Fleet were very close to the foot of the table, however Danny Searle has made Ebbsfleet look a side reborn. Draws to champions elect Chesterfield and playoff chasing Oldham were added to by wins against Eastleigh, Woking, Dorking and Rochdale, with the side now sat in 18th place, 3 points off the drop.

The whole season has gone by since we last met Ebbsfleet, the side were eliminated from the FA Cup in the fourth qualifying round by Slough and were eliminated in the third round of the FA Trophy by Bishop’s Stortford.

NL FORM GUIDE: DWWWW

IN THE DUGOUT

Danny Searle was given the permanent role at Ebbsfleet on February 13th after draws against promotion pushing Oldham and Chesterfield. Searle went on to beat Eastleigh, Woking, Dorking and Rochdale on his way to winning the Vanarama National League February Manager of the Month award. Searle started his life as a manager in 2019 at Braintree Town, joining the Shots in 2019 ahead of the 19/20 season. After 15th and 18th placed finished Searle left the Shots with the side in 21st, and went on to manage Waterford FC and also had a spell in the Czech Republic before joining Ebbsfleet in February this year.

SQUAD UPDATE

There are some new and returning faces around the EBB Stadium. Hady Ghandour returned to Aldershot following a very successful loan spell at Farnborough, scoring six in nine, and being recalled after Jack Barham suffered an injury at home to Barnet.

Tommy Widdrington also picked up Dylan Kadji on loan until the end of the season from Bristol City, following a spell at Forest Green Rovers during the first stage of the season. Kadji came off the bench and played 45 minutes for the Shots in the 2-0 victory over Oldham

Welcome Dylan, and welcome back, Hady!
