Shots Sign McGinty

Aldershot Town have signed Rochdale defender Sean McGinty on loan until Saturday 21 March.

The 21 year-old from Maidstone, who began his career at Charlton Athletic before graduating from the Manchester United Academy, is equally adept at centre-back and left-back.

Whilst at Old Trafford, he won the 2011 FA Youth Cup and signed his first professional contract that summer. Loan spells at Morecambe, Oxford United, Carlisle United and Tranmere Rovers followed, and in June 2013 the Republic of Ireland Under 21 international signed a two-year contract at Sheffield United.

Further loans at Northampton Town and Rochdale came in 2014, with a permanent move to Spotland sealed last summer. Earlier this season, McGinty made two appearances in the Vanarama Conference during a month at FC Halifax Town.

“We needed to bolster the squad and we’re happy that Sean has come down from Rochdale,” said Caretaker Manager Chris Barker. “He comes from a League One club, has played in both League Two and the Conference, and he’s left-footed, and he ticks all the boxes we need. It’s probably an opportunity for me to move inside to centre-back, and with seven games in 28 days it’s a good opportunity for Sean as well.”

McGinty will wear shirt number 3 and goes into Chris Barker’s squad to face Alfreton Town tomorrow.
