Shots Chairman Takes Public Ice Bucket Challenge For Local Hospice

Aldershot Town FC Chairman Shahid Azeem will undertake an Ice Bucket Challenge with a difference this Saturday, in front of over 2000 people. In aid of Farnham’s Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice, Azeem will be drenched on the pitch during half-time of The Shots’ Vanarama Conference fixture against Grimsby Town.

Paul Shrubb, a former Aldershot Town player and motor neurone disease sufferer, will administer the dunking. Shrubb, who was given two years to live by doctors in 2006, is a mentor for fellow MND patients at the Hospice.

The event hopes to raise over £1000 for the charity, with a bucket collection being held at the Electrical Services Stadium and further donations accepted via the Hospice’s website at www.PTH.org.uk.

Azeem said: “We all recognise how much the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice has helped people in our community in the last 35 years, including friends and family of people connected with Aldershot Town FC, and I wanted to add a personal and more localised angle to the Ice Bucket Challenge which has already achieved so much around the world.

“I hope that I can help to make a difference to the life of somebody who needs the Hospice’s services, and Paul’s involvement will make it even more special. He is a great friend of the Club and we hugely admire his spirit in fighting this disease.”

Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice is the only adult Hospice caring for terminally ill people and their families across the whole of West Surrey and part of North East Hampshire. It serves over half a million residents, providing Specialist Palliative Care to adult patients and their families affected by a terminal illness, such as cancer, heart, lung or neurological disease.

Every day, the Hospice supports over 140 patients and their families, either at home, in the community or at the Hospice. Central funding covers less than 15% of the Hospice’s costs, meaning that it needs to raise over £15,000 each day to maintain its exceptional levels of clinical care and support.
