MATCH PREVIEW: Lewes

WHO ARE THE SHOTS PLAYING?

Tommy Widdrington and the Shots take a week off from Vanarama National League action, kicking off the FA Cup campaign with a home tie in the fourth qualifying round. The game is Widdrington’s first since being named Vanarama National League Manager of the Week, as the Shots ended the only remaining unbeaten run in the National League at Solihull Moors last weekend.

Meeting the Shots in the cup will be Isthmian League Premier Division side Lewes. Also known as “the Rooks” Lewes will be playing in their fourth game of the season in the FA Cup, having already gone through three rounds to set up the clash at the EBB. The Rooks played their third qualifying round clash at their ground The Dripping Pan, which has seen the club gain some attention over recent years, as a book by Mike Bayly titled “British Football’s Greatest Ground” published in 2020 had Lewes’ home ground at the top.

LEWES LAST SEASON:

The Rooks were sent to replays in the first and second qualifying rounds in the 2022/23 FA Cup, being held 2-2 by Sheppey United in their first qualifying round tie last year. However, five goals from Joe Taylor and goals from Ronan Silva, Will Salmon and Deshane Dalling gave Lewes an 8-0 win in the replay, setting them up a tie with Three Bridges.

Again, Lewes couldn’t be seperated from their opposition first time round, drawing 1-1 with Three Bridges, but got sent crashing out of the FA Cup 4-0 in the replay. Lewes finished 6th in the Isthmian League Premier Division last season, finishing 14 points off winners Bishops Stortford.

23/24 SO FAR:

The side are currently 9th in the Isthmian League Premier Division, and have already been through three rounds of the FA Cup. The side have scored 9 and conceded just 1 goal so far in the FA Cup, having beaten Faversham Town 4-0 first time out, getting a 2-1 win against Ascot United in the second qualifying round and dispatching Hampton & Richmond 3-0 in the third qualifying round to set up a fourth qualifying round clash at the EBB.

FA CUP HISTORY:

Lewes will be looking to make a fourth FA Cup First Round Proper appearance in their history, and a first since the 2007/08 season. The side made it into the First Round Proper for the first time ever in 2001/02, and made back to back appearances in 2006/07 and 2007/08, but haven’t made it as far in the competition since.
