Aldershot Town have donated £2000 to Aldershot homeless charity Step by Step as part of the Football Association’s Community Shield Fund.
The total money, raised by ticket money and profits from the sale of the match programme at the 2016 FA Community Shield, amounted to 36% of the matchday income as Leicester City faced Manchester United at Wembley Stadium in August.
Each of the 124 clubs who participated in the FA Cup from the first round proper have been allocated an equal share of the fund to donate to community initiatives of their choice. The remainder of the fund will be donated to charities including The Bobby Moore Fund, Breast Cancer Care, The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and the Royal British Legion.
“We are so grateful to Aldershot Town FC for this donation towards our work,” said Step By Step Trustee Phil Kent. “It really will make a massive difference to the young people we support. The monies could provide emergency bed accommodation and support for one month, helping many young people start on the journey to building a brighter future for themselves.
“We would not be able to help more than 1,800 people each year without the support of the local community, so thank you to everyone involved at Aldershot Town in making this donation. It was a pleasure to attend the match (against Dover Athletic) to receive the cheque and to see The Shots win!
“We would also like to thank the Football Club for their on-going support in hosting our annual Sleep-Out at the EBB Stadium, and we are very much looking forward to working with them to hold another fundraising Sleep-Out on Friday 23 June.”
Step by Step works across Hampshire, Surrey and West Berkshire, a region in which well over 2000 young people are regularly sleeping rough. The charity provides accommodation, specialist support services, training and employment opportunities to 16-24 year olds facing homelessness and other difficulties in their lives.
