Aldershot Town are delighted to welcome ex-Man United, Tottenham, Aldershot and England Star Teddy Sheringham as special guest at the Club’s annual Sportsman’s Dinner on Friday 5th November 2021 at Farnborough’s Village Hotel!
The black tie event is one of the Club’s annual fundraisers and a highlight of the local social calendar. From 7pm, guests will enjoy a pre-dinner drinks reception and delicious three-course meal, before joining the free-scoring forward in remembering a fascinating career.
Sheringham played as a forward in a 24-year professional career. Sheringham began his career at Millwall FC, where he also spent a short spell on loan with Aldershot FC, he went on to score 111 goals between 1983 and 1991, and is Millwall’s second all-time leading scorer. After joining Nottingham Forest from Millwall FC, having scored Forest’s first ever Premiership goal in the process, the forward moved onto Tottenham Hotspur in 1992. After five seasons at Spurs, Sheringham joined Manchester United where he won three Premiership titles, one FA Cup, one UEFA Champions League, an Intercontinental Cup and an FA Charity Shield. In 2001, he was named both the PFA Players’ Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year.
A second spell with Tottenham Hotspur followed for Sheringham before he spent one season at newly promoted Portsmouth FC, scoring the club’s first Premier League goal. West Ham United followed for Sheringham, where he helped the club gain promotion from the 2004–05 Football League Championship, before appearing for West Ham in the 2006 FA Cup Final, becoming the third-oldest player to appear in an FA Cup Final.
Sheringham is also currently the eleventh-highest goalscorer in the history of the Premiership with 146 goals, and also holds the record as the oldest outfield player to appear in a Premier League match (40 years, 272 days) and the oldest player to score in a Premier League match (40 years, 268 days). He was capped 51 times for the England national football team, scoring 11 times, and played in the 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cups, as well as the 1996 UEFA European Championship.
The 55 year-old is joined on the bill by hilarious comedian Mark Simmons, who has appeared on popular TV shows including Mock The Week and is an exceptional one-liner comedian. It won him a place in Dave’s prestigious Best Joke of The Fringe in Edinburgh 2017. His solo show at the festival, One-Linerer was also a huge hit, with sell out shows every day and was nominated Best Show by the Amused Moose Comedy Award Fringe Show 2017. He then continued this success with his follow-up show, One-Linererer, which was also a sell out!
Simmons has been in high demand for the top UK comedy clubs, such as Glee, Manford’s Comedy Club, Comedy Central and Just The Tonic, headlining the majority of them. Also, he has been recently supporting Seann Walsh, Rob Beckett and Rob Brydon on their national tours, as well as one off shows supporting Michael McIntyre, Sean Lock and Jack Dee.
Though far from being a novice to radio, as Mark co-hosts with Seann Walsh the Newish show as well as the Filmish show on Fubar Radio, this year marked his debut on BBC Radio 4 where he guest-starred on the Today Program. Mark’s TV presence is also growing. As well as recently recording a couple of TV pilots, he has starred in the hit BBC3 documentary One for The Road, where a film crew followed him alongside Seann Walsh on tour in the Scottish Highlands.
The evening will also feature some amazing raffle prizes and an auction. Tickets are £600 + VAT for a table of 10 or £60 + VAT each.
