Player Spotlight: Will Nightingale

Will is a newer face at the EBB Stadium this season and has been a superb addition so far. With plenty of professional experience under his belt, he is exactly the type of player you want in the dressing room. With a level head and an air of professionalism, Will is a great example of how working hard week in week out can help get your team results.

After sustaining an unfortunate injury back in September keeping him out of action for almost two months, it was great to have Will back in action for the busy Christmas schedule and as we look to build in the new year. Aside from his time spent under injury, Will has featured in every game this season, recording a full ninety minutes in all but two and demonstrating his place as a core component of our 2025/26 campaign.

EARLY CAREER

In 2014, Will signed his first professional contract with AFC Wimbledon after playing in the club’s youth system since the age of 9. Since then, he went on to become a legend of the club making over 200 appearances across a 9 year tenure.

More recently, Will has also spent some time up in Scotland where he was on loan for Ross County in the Scottish Premiership, racking up a total of 37 games across all competitions. Now having made the move back into English football, Will has re-adjusted very quickly to the pace and style of play, which enabled him to hit the ground running at the start of the 2025/26 season.

FOOTBALLING ACHIEVEMENTS

Aside from solidifying himself as a club legend at Wimbledon, Will’s career accomplishments include helping to secure promotion to League One in 2016, becoming League Two play-off champions in the process. He was also named as The Dons player of the year in the 2017/18 season after successfully avoiding relegation.

FACT-FILE

We are well aware that Will’s ability on the pitch is second to none, so here are a few things you might not know about him:

  • After his long service to the club, Will was honoured with a testimonial match by AFC Wimbledon. Lots of previous teammates and legends alike came together to mark the end of his service to the club, including the likes of Adebayo Akinfenwa.
  • Despite the general consensus of defenders liking to get stuck in, Will has only been sent off once throughout his entire career in football, and picking up just 31 yellow cards in his career.

WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT IN YOUR CAREER?

I’d say scoring the first goal at Plough Lane, for the first competitive goal scored in front of fans at the new stadium, a 3-3 draw Vs Bolton Wanderers!
