Chesterfield 3-0 Aldershot Town

The Shots fell to defeat in Derbyshire as Chesterfield continued their 100% start to the season.

Charlie Carter’s two first-half goals were augmented by Marc-Antoine Fortune’s late penalty but, even though Gary Waddock admitted that The Shots deserved nothing from the game, there were still a couple of moments on which the result may have hinged.

Gozie Ugwu hit the post from 18 yards and seconds later, in the tenth minute, the Spireites were ahead. Weston collected a deep cross on the byline and with a back-heel set up Carter to drive the ball low into the net.

Yet in the 28th minute, Rendell lifted the ball over the home defence and, as the referee waved away appeals for offside, Fenelon raced through only to see his effort blocked by Shwan Jalal.

Chesterfield then doubled their lead on 40 minutes, as Carter burst inside from the left flank to fire a shot inside the near-post.

The Shots had another great chance to drag themselves back into the game just two minutes after the break. Gallagher’s deft through ball sent McClure chasing in behind but, as Jalal advanced to narrow the angle, his shot was stabbed just wide.

Binnom-Williams and Adam McDonnell exchanged shots, both of which flew wide of goal, midway through the second-half, but the result was confirmed on 81 minutes.

The Shots had repelled one attack as the ball ricocheted over to Chesterfield’s right flank, where Drew Talbot charged into the penalty area and went down after a tangle of legs involving Lewis Kinsella. Fortune drove his 82nd minute penalty over Cole’s dive, but the goalkeeper was able to deny Carter a hat-trick, tipping his angled drive onto the post after the hosts worked a short-corner routine.
