Match Preview: York City (H)

The Shots have a tough test at the EBB stadium this weekend as they look to take on title
contenders York City in the Enterprise National League. Our visitors this weekend will be sure to
test the Shots defence as they are far away the top goalscoring side of this campaign on 97.

Established in 1922, the North Yorkshire side were the first club in English Football to reach a
points tally of over 100 in a season when they won the Fourth Division in 1984. They are also
huge fans of the play-offs, having attempted to secure promotion via the tournament on five
different occasions since 2006.

York City have adopted several nicknames over the years, with the most recent name ‘the
Minstermen’ after the famous York Minster Cathedral, becoming official in 1972. Before that they
were commonly referred to as ‘the Robins’ because of the red coloured kit that the team wore,
and were also known as ‘the Happy Wanderers’ during a successful FA Cup run in 1954/55.

RECENT FORM

The Minstermen have built up a fearsome reputation this season and are currently the second most in-form team in the league, an exact reflection of their current league standing in second place. They have accumulated 10 wins in their last 11 games, with the only defeat coming against fellow promotion chasers Boreham Wood earlier this month.

7th March – York 3 – 1 Eastleigh
3rd March – Boreham Wood 3 – 2 York
28th Feb – Morecambe 0 – 1 York
24th Feb – Scunthorpe 0 – 3 York
21st Feb – York 4 – 1 Halifax

REVERSE FIXTURE AND PREVIOUS MEETINGS

The Shots have faced off against The Minstermen on 18 occasions, coming out victorious on 6
occasions and suffering 7 defeats. Recent matches have unfortunately not been so balanced,
with the Shots winning only twice since 2016. The game on Saturday will be a chance to make a
statement in a fixture that York City will be expected to win, but this current Shots side is more
than capable of an upset.

In the reverse fixture last November John Coleman’s side suffered an unfortunate 5-1 defeat in
a game that slipped away in the second half. The Shots did well to see off the opposition
attacking threats until substitute Joe Grey scored a hat-trick after coming on in the 63rd minute.
This time the Shots will be looking to bounce back and show our opponents a strong defensive
display.

IN THE DUGOUT

Stuart Maynard has been the man in charge for York City since August 2025, having taken over
from Adam Hinshelwood who led a successful campaign last season finishing in second place.
Maynard has taken on projects at both ends of the table during his management career so far
and has proven himself effective, having helped Wealdstone beat the drop in his first few
months in charge. He also has experience managing within the EFL, where his success at
Wealdstone earned him a move to League Two side Notts County and lead them to a 6th placed
finish.

The appointment of Maynard shows ambition and forward thinking from York City as they now
look like promising candidates for promotion to the Football League this season, and this
weekend it’s up to the Shots to make sure his journey there is much more difficult than he’ll be
hoping for.

KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH

Ollie Pearce:

Pearce has been the main man up top for the Minstermen this season and currently leads the race for the golden boot with 29 goals. He is a proven goal-scorer who has consistently reached tallies of over 25 in a season, even hitting 40 in the 2023/24 campaign with Worthing in the National League South. It is crucial that the Shots do not give him any time on the ball to get a shot away, as this man knows how to find the back of the net.

Harrison Male:

The York City goalkeeper has had some standout performances this season, keeping 13 clean sheets and maintaining a ratio of less than one goal conceded per game. He also won the League’s golden glove award last season, and at only 25 years old has a bright future ahead of him. The Shots will need to get creative with their attacking prowess to put the ball past him.
