Match Preview: Wealdstone (A)

Easter Monday marks the second game in four days for the Shots, this time heading to Ruislip to face Wealdstone in the Enterprise National League. The game will be a chance for the boys in red and blue to make it three games unbeaten as they look to finish the season with a strong run of form.

Founded in 1899, Wealdstone are one of non-league football’s most historic clubs, with a proud tradition stretching back well over a century. Based in Ruislip, the journey there will be one of the shortest that the Shots will have to make this season, beaten only by Woking and Sutton. The club has experienced a varied history, including spells outside the top tiers of non-league football, but has re-established itself in recent years as a competitive force at this level.

One of the most notable moments in Wealdstone’s history came in 1985, when they became the first club to achieve the famous Non-League “Double,” winning both the Alliance Premier League (now the National League) and the FA Trophy in the same season. The Stones have also built a reputation for resilience, having climbed back up the pyramid after financial difficulties in the 1990s forced them to drop down the leagues.

Off the pitch, Wealdstone are widely recognised for their place in football heritage thanks to the viral “Wealdstone Raider”, which brought unexpected global attention to the club. The loyal fan helped to show the world how passionate the Wealdstone fanbase are and was fantastic for boosting media interactions. The Shots will have to keep a look out for the opposition’s 12th man this Monday!

RECENT FORM

Wealdstone come into this fixture in mixed form, particularly at home. They have won two of their last six matches, one of which was a league-shocking 7–0 victory over Hartlepool United, alongside a 1–0 win against Marine to reach the FA Trophy final. However, defeats to Yeovil Town and Forest Green Rovers, plus a heavy loss at Boreham Wood demonstrate the inconsistency in their results.

31st Mar – Wealdstone 7 – 0 Hartlepool

28th Mar – Wealdstone 1 – 0 Marine (FA Trophy)

25th Mar – Wealdstone 0 – 2 Yeovil

17th Mar – Gateshead 1 – 0 Wealdstone

REVERSE FIXTURE AND PREVIOUS MEETINGS

The Shots have faced off against Wealdstone a total of 12 times since 2021, taking the upper hand by winning 7, compared to just 3 for the Stones. Encounters between the two sides are typically high-scoring with two-thirds of the last 12 games featuring 4 or more goals, suggesting another open contest could be in store.

The reverse fixture earlier this season saw the Shots claim a thrilling 4–1 victory, continuing the strong record in this fixture during recent times. The four different goal-scorers were James Henry, who took not even 60 seconds to open the scoring, Josh Barrett, Charlie Warren and Ryan Hill with a trademark penalty.

IN THE DUGOUT

Gary Waddock is the man in charge for the Stones since he took charge in January 2026, a familiar face around the EBB, Waddock managed the Shots between 2007 and 2009, where he now looks to take on his former team at the Grosvenor Vale Stadium. The Wealdstone boss has plenty of experience managing within the EFL, having started his managerial journey with QPR and spending times at the likes of Walsall and Cambridge United.

Since his appointment, Waddock has implemented a more expansive and attacking style, encouraging quick transitions and forward-thinking play. Early signs suggest a positive shift, with back-to-back wins shortly after his arrival helping lift the team up the table.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Mason Barrett:
A commanding presence at the back, Barrett offers physicality and aerial strength. The centre-back has also shown he can contribute at crucial moments, including important goals in past campaigns, making him a key figure defensively.

Micah Obiero:
A dangerous attacking outlet, Obiero has recently delivered in big moments including a dramatic stoppage-time winner to send Wealdstone to Wembley in the FA Trophy. His pace and direct running make him a constant threat in transition, and with 13 goals and 4 assists he is putting up some good numbers to compliment his effective playing style.
