The Shots wrap up their 2025/26 with one final home fixture this weekend as they take on Truro in the Enterprise National League. There will be little to play for other than pride for both sides, with John Coleman looking to bow out from his time in charge with a final victory in front of the Shots’ fans.
Renowned as the figurehead of Cornish football, Truro are both the biggest club within the county and the southernmost professional club in the whole country, leaving them with a long trip to the EBB on Saturday. Despite this, the Tinners recently spent a period of time playing outside their home region due to stadium difficulties, 200 miles away in Gloucester. In the same season that they finally were able to play back home in Cornwall, Truro secured promotion to the Enterprise National League for the first time in 2025.
Truro have seen plenty of silverware on their journey to the 5th tier. In 2007 they lifted the FA Vase, becoming the first ever Cornish side to, coincidentally, compete in and win the competition in history. Alongside this, they have been crowned as champions of numerous local leagues and have won the Cornwall Senior Cup an impressive 17 times.
RECENT FORM
The Tinners go into their final fixture with a run of form that sheds light on their league position, picking up just 3 points in their last 6 matches. It hasn’t been the debut season that the club would have been hoping for, and they will be just as desperate to end their winless run as the Shots will.
18th Apr – Truro 0 -1 Carlisle
11th Apr – Boston 1 – 0 Truro
6th Apr – Truro 1 -1 Forest Green
3rd Apr – Yeovil 1 – 0 Truro
28th Mar – Truro 0 – 0 Boreham Wood
25th Mar – Truro 1 – 1 Solihull
PREVIOUS MEETINGS AND REVERSE FIXTURE
This Saturday will provide just the second recorded game between the two sides of recent years, with the first being the reverse fixture played in September last year. Truro’s rise through the local Cornish leagues has meant they have not encountered the Shots until their promotion to the Enterprise National League last season, so there will be no old or familiar faces around the EBB on Saturday afternoon.
The reverse fixture at the Truro City Stadium ended in an eventful 2-2 draw, where stoppage time goals in bot halves from Kwame Thomas and James Henry were enough to rescue a point on the road. The Shots carved out an uphill battle for themselves early on when Goalkeeper Marcus Dewhurst was sent off in the first half, and were reduced further when Cam Hargreaves saw a second yellow in stoppage time, leaving nine men on the field. This time, the Shots will be hoping to leave out the theatrical entertainment and claim a convincing result to round off their 2025/26 campaign.
IN THE DUGOUT
John Askey is the man in charge for the Tinners, having taken over in the summer of 2024. It’s been a tale of two season for the former Macclesfield boss, who was unable to ride the wave of winning the National League South into this season where his side have since been relegated and unable to pull themselves from the bottom of the table.
Askey specialises in establishing organised teams who are close to promotion, getting them over the line and taking them to the highs of the league above. He achieved promotions with Truro, Macclesfield and York City using strong defensive structures and a disciplined style of play, however his side from last season were unable to replicate this strategy at a higher level and will go again next season in the National League South.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Tyler Harvey (Striker)
Despite being off the boil this season, Harvey has proven himself to be a prolific goal-scorer who has hit 20+ goals in a season on numerous occasions. He was top-scorer for the Tinners in the title winning campaign hitting the net 28 times in all competitions, and is a confident poacher who can steal goals despite having few opportunities.
Max Kinsey (Defender)
The young Bournemouth loanee has hit a consistent run of games at the back end of the season. While he previously struggled to make the starting eleven, Kinsey is now getting regular starts for Truro and has put in some impressive performances, including a clean sheet against Sutton in a 3-0 win and a 1-1 draw with play-off contenders Forest Green. The young centre-half could be one to keep an eye on in the future.
