The Shots travel to Tamworth this Saturday for a valentines day special, however it is unlikely to be a very loving affair between the two sides. The Lambs currently sit 12th in the Enterprise National League and just five points above The Shots, so there’s a big three points to be earned in tomorrow’s fixture.
Established in 1933, the Staffordshire club are currently the only side to make use of an artificial 3G playing surface in the league, which makes for a consistently hot topic on the ‘fairness’ of using a synthetic football pitch. In January last year, The lambs hosted premier league outfit Tottenham in the FA Cup, where the playing surface was a well discussed factor as the Tottenham were taken all the way to extra time by the non-league side.
Tamworth have seen tremendous growth in recent years, achieving back-to-back promotions in the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons and solidifying themselves as a step one club. This week, The Shots will need to play their part in putting a halt to a third promotion effort in four years.
RECENT FORM
Despite sitting in the top half of the table, Tamworth have not had a great record of late, securing just one win in their last 6 matches. Our opponents this week have also been generous in sharing out points, with them drawing five out of the eight games they have played since the turn of the new year.
10th Feb – Morecambe 2 – 2 Tamworth
7th Feb – Tamworth 1 – 1 Hartlepool
31st Jan – Tamworth 0 – 0 Marine (FA Trophy)
27th Jan – Tamworth 1 – 0 Halifax
24th Jan – Tamworth 0 – 1 Sutton
REVERSE FIXTURE AND PREVIOUS MEETINGS
The Shots have faced off against Tamworth a total of 13 times over the years. Unfortunately, this weeks visitors have won twice the amount of times that we’ve beaten them, equating to six Tamworth victories against three for The Shots. However, considering the form that both sides have been in, confidence will be sky high as we try to add a fourth win to our tally.
The reverse fixture back in October saw a devastating, last minute defeat after a stoppage time winner from Tamworth’s number 10 Beck-Ray Enoru. This time out, let’s hope to be on the scoring end of such a last minute winner and give our visitors a taste of their own medicine.
IN THE DUGOUT
In charge for the visitors this weekend is Andy Peaks, who enters his fourth year of a successful period with the club. Peaks joined in 2022, leading the club to back-to-back promotions and signing a new deal last January keeping him at the club until 2027.
Before his new contract, Peaks only worked part time at Tamworth, operating as a support worker for a local college alongside his management duties. Before joining Tamworth, he managed lower league sides Rushden and Diamond, Daventry and Long Buckby, showing off a strong trajectory as he works his way up the divisions.
