WHO ARE THE SHOTS PLAYING?
Tommy Widdrington faces one more test in his pre-season preperations, travelling to south London to take on League Two side Sutton United. The game is the Shots final clash before hosting Oxford City on opening weekend in the National League, and it comes following a 3-1 victory against Chelsea at the EBB.
HOW DID THEY DO LAST SEASON?
Sutton finished 14th in League Two last season, picking up 15 wins in 46 games to round out the campaign on 58 points, ending the season with a point at home to Carlisle. A former Shot in Francis Amartey was on the scoresheet in Sutton’s only FA Cup game last season, as they lost 2-0 at home to Farnborough to start and end their cup run on the same day. As a football league side, Sutton also took part in the Carabao Cup, but suffered defeat in the first round again, this time at the hands of MK Dons.
PREVIOUS MEETINGS:
The Shots last met Sutton during pre-season 2021, turning over a 1-0 half time deficit via goals from Jake Andrews and Alfy Whittingham to win 2-1 on the road. The sides had also played twice in the season prior, with Sutton picking up a 2-1 win at Aldershot before the turn of the year in 2020, and then repeating their success in a 3-1 victory in May 2021, as they went on to achieve promotion that season.
PLAYED FOR BOTH:
Coby Rowe: One of Aldershot’s new additions in defence came from Sutton United this summer. Rowe was part of Sutton’s side from 2019/20 up until this summer, in which time he made 68 appearances, and scored 6 goals for Sutton, playing 10 times in 2020/21 as Sutton achieved promotion to League Two as champions.
Kwame Thomas: Another new Shots addition from Sutton comes in the form of striker Kwame Thomas. Thomas had an original month long loan spell with Sutton from Coventry in 2017/18, before he joined them permanently on a free transfer from Wrexham in 2022/23, where he played 13 times.
