MATCH PREVIEW: Southend

WHO ARE THE SHOTS PLAYING?

The Shots return to action at the EBB to take on the league’s bottom side Southend United. Aldershot are returning home after playing consecutive fixtures on the road, losing 2-1 in a good display against Barnet and getting the better of Boreham Wood in a 2-1 victory at Meadow Park last Saturday.

Visiting the EBB will be Southend United, also known as the Shrimpers. Southend were founded 117 years ago in 1906, and currently play their home fixtures at Roots Hall.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS:

The Shots visited Roots Hall on a Tour of Duty towards the end of last season, and were 2-1 victors against the Shrimpers. Rhys Murphy had given Southend the lead, but second half goals from Tyler Frost and Joe Partington gave Aldershot an important three points. Aldershot also scored twice in the first fixture at the EBB in November last season, but kept a clean sheet, as Justin Amaluzor and Corey Jordan scored goals in a 2-0 win for Aldershot.

LAST SEASON:

The three points the Shots took off Southend at Roots Hall proved costly come April, as the Shrimpers missed out on playoff football by one position and two points, ending the season in 8th place. In the FA Cup, Southend were eliminated in the fourth qualifying round by Woking, and in the FA Trophy made it to the fifth round, where they were eliminated by York City.

23/24 SO FAR:

If not for their points deduction Southend would be sitting in 8th place on goal difference going into Tuesday’s game. The Shrimpers have won five of their opening 11 games, and have picked up one draw against Halifax, and have lost their other five, losing two of their last three against York and Fylde. Despite the points deduction Southend actually went into their last clash against Fylde off the foot of the National League, but fell to defeat and back to the bottom.
