MATCH PREVIEW: Shots v Gateshead (A)

WHO ARE THE SHOTS PLAYING?

After victory at the EBB last Saturday, Aldershot are back on the road. Gateshead are coming into this fixture off the back of a 1-1 draw with Torquay, and will welcome the Shots to the Gateshead International Stadium at 12:30 tomorrow. The Tynesdiers are currently 21st in the National League, having picked up 17 points from their opening 20 fixtures.

HOW DID THEY DO LAST SEASON?

Gateshead won the National League North last season by 7 points to secure their place back in the National League for the first time since 2018-19. Gateshead almost made it to the lucrative third round of the FA Cup last season, but were beating by Charlton in the second round. It was a very different story in the FA Trophy, as they fell at the first hurdle against Fylde in the second round.

HOW HAVE WE GOT ON AGAINST THEM IN THE PAST?

Gateshead did the double over Aldershot in the 18-19 season, winning 3-0 at home and then coming to the EBB and winning 2-0. However, the double victory was not enough, with Gateshead going down, meaning the meeting between the two sides tomorrow is the first since 2019.

WHO IS THEIR GAFFER?

Gateshead are currently managed by former player Mike Williamson, who is in his first managerial role at the Gateshead International Stadium. Williamson made over 400 senior appearances at club level, playing 150 times for Newcastle United, and joined Gateshead as a player in 2018, before becoming manager after the sides relegation in 2019. Williamson took the side back up in 2021/22 after a 2-2 draw with Chorley on the penultimate gameweek saw Gateshead promoted as champions.

GATESHEAD SQUAD UPDATE:

Top scorer Adam Campbell is also Mike Williamson’s most trusted player, having played 1,800 minutes this season and appeared in 20 games. Dan Ward is the only other player in the squad who has played 20 games for Williamson, so the pair are likely to play tomorrow. Owen Bailey, Greg Olley, Carl Magnay, Ethan Pye, Robbie Tinkler and Kenton Richardson are the other members of the squad to have played over 1,000 minutes this season, so all are up with a good chance of being picked by Williamson for the fixture tomorrow.

ANY EX-SHOTS?

Robbie Tinkler played for the Shots in the 19-20 season, and played 30 times, scoring one goal against Dagenham and Redbridge, and even took the armband three times against Chorley, Dover and Hartlepool, keeping 2/3 clean sheets from right back as captain.
