Match Preview: Scunthorpe (H)

This Saturday The Shots welcome Scunthorpe to the EBB Stadium in what will be a tremendous
test against the league’s 4th placed side.

Established in 1899, The Irons are a club with an exceptional history within English football and
have produced some of the game’s top world-class players, including two-time ballon d’or
winner Kevin Keegan as well as former Tottenham Hotspur captain and England footballer
Michael Dawson.

Scunthorpe saw their most successful period in history during the noughties where two
promotions in three years saw them reach the second tier of English Football. They have also
spent a lengthy period within the football leagues until their relegation to the National League
back in 2022, marking the end of a 70 odd year period.

RECENT FORM

Scunthorpe have had a severe turn of form in the last couple of months, going from winning
every game in December and an 11 game unbeaten league run to now being winless in their
last three matches. The Shots will look to capitalise on this blip in an otherwise impressive run of
games and hopefully set the panic alarms off by adding to our visitors winless tally.

17th Feb – Rochdale 1 – 1 Scunthorpe
14th Feb – Scunthorpe 3 – 6 Boston
10th Feb – Carlisle 3 – 2 Scunthorpe
7th Feb – Scunthorpe 1 – 0 Southend
31st Jan – Scunthorpe 1 – 2 Horsham (FA Trophy)

REVERSE FIXTURE AND PREVIOUS MEETINGS

There have been just three bouts between The Shots and The Irons, with our visitors securing
two victories to one. However this could all change on Saturday as The Shots look to level the
scoring in a fixture that has been rare over the years. Despite only facing each other a handful
of times, both sides have put on a show in previous matches, including a six goal thriller in 2022
that ended in a draw.
In the reverse fixture back in October, The Shots were unfortunately bested in a 2-1 defeat,
courtesy of an early winner in the 32nd minute. However, The Shots have recently been far
more interested in creating late drama, so be prepared for some edge of your seat action
throughout the entirety of the game this time around.

IN THE DUGOUT

This Saturday we welcome Andy Butler to the opposition technical area as he looks for a win to
put his side back on track against a strong, in-form Shots’ side. Butler was appointed as head
coach by The Irons in 2024, following a relegation to the National League North division.

During his time at the club, Butler secured promotion back to the Enterprise National League
and has guided his team into 4th place during the current campaign. Scunthorpe is where Butler
began his managerial career, which was interestingly the same place he began his playing
career.

Before his appointment, Butler had coached at Doncaster Women’s as well as
Peterborough, however his current role at Scunthorpe has been his first real test in professional
first-team management.

KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH

Callum Roberts:
Roberts has been a crucial source of goals for The Iron so far and would be a strong contender
for the golden boot if it wasn’t for York City’s Ollie Pearce. Contributing 15 league goals so far
this campaign, he has been a consistent threat in and around the box and will be one for The
Shots to watch out for.

Zain Westbrooke:
On loan from Doncaster, Westbrook’s versatility in the midfield has been key to success so far.
With lots of experience in the EFL, he understands what it takes to dominate the midfield and
get his team on the front foot. The Shots will need to be sure to keep an eye on him this Saturday.
