WHO ARE THE SHOTS PLAYING?
Aldershot Town return to National League action following two cup ties as they take on Kidderminster Harriers at Aggborough. The fixture is a first in the National League since a win away at Woking for the Shots, having played in both the FA Cup and the FA Trophy in the two weekends since the 3-2 victory on New Year’s Day.
Their return to action in the league comes against Kidderminster Harriers. Also known as “Kiddy”, Kidderminster were founded in 1886, making them 138 years old as of 2024, and the side are currently playing their first season back in the National League following their promotion to the division from the National League North via the playoffs last season.
LAST TIME OUT:
The fixture on Saturday is the second meeting of the Shots and Kiddy this season, with Kidderminster having already made the trip down to the EBB Stadium this season. The fixture came with a great deal of expectation for Shots fans following a 7-4 victory at Swindon, with Kidderminster bottom of the National League at the time the two sides met.
Josh Stokes was the difference that day as he scored the only goal in the first half, and the visiting Kidderminster will feel they could have had something on the day, playing much better than the league table suggested prior to kick off. The result was Tommy Widdrington’s first 1-0 victory of the season with the Shots, a result which he described as “the one result that we haven’t had all season that I’m delighted to tick off the list”.
SINCE WE LAST MET:
Kidderminster kept themselves in the hunt for the FA Trophy last weekend against fellow National League side Altrincham. The game ended 0-0 after 90 minutes, but Kiddy were able to put themselves into the next round of the cup on penalties.
National League form for Kidderminster has left a lot to be desired, picking up just one win against Ebbsfleet at home, but also drawing a further three games against Oxford, Hartlepool and Boreham Wood, and also losing a further five games.
The side are still sat bottom of the National League, but the Shots will know from last time out that the league table doesn’t represent the quality which Kidderminster have, and under new management the game will be a test for Tommy Widdrington and the Shots.
IN THE DUGOUT:
A new face will be in the opposition dugout for Tommy Widdrington at Aggborough, as Phil Brown has been appointed Kidderminster’s new manager. Brown is a big name in the English game, having managed as high as the Premier League with Hull City, taking the side from the Championship to the top flight of English football.
Brown had a stint at Derby prior to taking the Hull job, and has since been in charge of Preston, Southend, Swindon, Hyderabad, Southend again, Barrow, and now Kidderminster. The former right back left Barrow following failure to agree a deal on a permanent basis, and Kidderminster is his first role in management since he left Barrow at the end of the 2021/22 season.
