MATCH PREVIEW: Havant & Waterlooville FC v Shots (A) (Pre-season)

WHO ARE THE SHOTS PLAYING?

Shots final pre-season outing is away to Havant & Waterlooville. Nicknamed “The Hawks”, Havant & Waterlooville were founded in 1998. They currently play in the National League South, the sixth tier of English football.

HOW DID THEY DO LAST SEASON?

Havant and Waterlooville finished eighth in the National League South last season, picking up 15 wins in 40 games to finish on 57 points. Their eighth placed finish saw them finish two points off Chippenham Town, and the last play-off position in seventh.

HOW HAVE WE GOT ON AGAINST THEM IN THE PAST?

The three previous occasions Shots have faced Havant & Waterlooville have garnered mixed success. In 13/14, Aldershot visited the Hawks in an FA Trophy tie, losing 4-1 in the process. Shots faced the Hawks again in 18/19 during the National League season, losing 2-1 away but managed to win 2-0 when The Hawks visited Aldershot.

WHO IS THEIR GAFFER?

The current Havant & Waterlooville manager is 55-year-old Paul Doswell. Doswell has been in charge of the side since April 2019 and During his first season, guided The Hawks to a second place finish in National League South. However, they failed to gain promotion, falling to Dartford in the semi-finals off the play-offs.

Doswell is most well known for his time in charge of Sutton United, joining the side in 2008, following their relegation from the Conference South. His first of two promotions in charge came in 2010/11, guiding Sutton from the Isthmian League to the Conference South. Five years later, Doswell and Sutton were again promoted to the National League South. Another notable achievement came when Doswell’s Sutton made it to the fifth round of the FA Cup in 2017 – only the ninth non-league side to do so – going out at the hands of eventual winners Arsenal.

HAVANT & WATERLOOVILLE PLAYING SQUAD:

Former Torquay pair Danny Wright and Jake Andrews have joined the side this summer. Veteran forward Danny Wright comes off the back of a 5 goal season in the National League, with Jake Andrews joining the Hawks permanently following a season on loan in 21/22. Jason Prior and Gianni Crichlow have joined the attacking ranks from Dorking and Braintree Town respectively. Their fifth and final signing is centre-back Josh Nembhard, joining from Hemel Hempstead Town.

ANY EX-SHOTS?

Havant & Waterlooville have three ex-Shots playing for them next season. Most notably is Joe Oastler who joined the Shots in 2013/14 and went on to make 88 appearances for Aldershot before leaving the club in 2015/16.

Ross Worner and Jamie Collins both had stints Aldershot during the 2011/12 season in League Two. Collins played 25 times and Worner, who joined Aldershot for £90,000 from Charlton in 2011, made 22 league appearances in 2011/12 before leaving the club for Wimbledon in 2013.
