The Shots are back at home for Saturday’s fixture at the EBB Stadium as they look to make it three wins on the spin against a strong Halifax side. Tomorrow’s opposition will be a fantastic test of character and an opportunity for the team to really demonstrate what they are capable of.
Established in 1911, our opponents this week make up a significant part of the footballing community in West Yorkshire, alongside the likes of Leeds United, Bradford City, and Huddersfield Town. Out of these sides, they are the only club currently competing outside the top 4 tiers, and will therefore be gunning for a swift return to League 2.
Just like The Shots, Halifax operate as a Phoenix club after they were forced into administration back in 2008. This slammed them all the way back to the 8th tier of the football pyramid. The recovery since then, however, has been to their credit as The Shaymen managed three promotions in the space of five years, including back-to-back promotions in 2009/10 and 2010/11. With a return to the football league evading them so far, Halifax have certainly put themselves in the running for a ticket this season.
RECENT FORM
The Shaymen find themselves in terrific form of late, winning five of their last six league games. Their last two games, however, both saw the end of two cup runs, first of all in the National League Cup with a 1-0 defeat at Tamworth and secondly a defeat to Kidderminster after penalties in the FA Trophy. The Shots will be sure to try and capitalise on these recent defeats and put an end to the good league that our opposition have displayed in the last couple of months.
31st January – Halifax 1 – 1 Kidderminster (Kidderminster win 4-3 on penalties, FA Trophy)
27th January – Tamworth 1 – 0 Halifax (National League Cup)
24th January – Eastleigh 2 – 3 Halifax
21st January – Halifax 1 – 0 Morecambe
17th January Halifax 2 – 1 Boston
REVERSE FIXTURE AND PREVIOUS MEETINGS
The Shots have faced off against Halifax a total of 23 times over the years, winning 8 of these games and losing 10. Despite this, there are only 2 goals separating the two sides on aggregate, with The Shots scoring 30 and Halifax scoring 32. The fixture has provided some fantastic entertainment over the years, including a 5-1 demolition of the Shaymen back in 2022, as well as a 7-goal thriller, unfortunately ending in a 4-3 defeat in 2024.
The reverse fixture back in September last year was not the result the Shots would have been hoping for, ending in a 4-2 defeat with consolation goals coming from James Clarridge and Hady Ghandor. However, we’ve shown that we’re more than capable of putting a couple of goals past Saturday’s opposition, and with the solid defensive displays of late, there is every chance of The Shots getting a good result.
IN THE DUGOUT
Adam Lakeland is the man in charge of the Shayman, with his appointment being announced prior to the 2025/26 season. Lakeland joined Halifax after successful spells with both King’s Lynn, where he secured their safety in his first season and a play-off position in his second season, and Curzon Ashton, where he achieved back-to-back promotions. It is clear that Lakeland is capable of backing up his managerial abilities with proven success, which he is now demonstrating with Halifax as they aim to secure that playoff spot this season.
Alongside Lakeland is assistant head coach Sam Walker, who followed his boss from both Curzon Ashton and King’s Lynn to join The Shaymen. Walker already had history with the club, having played for them in the 2015/16 season and being part of the FA Trophy-winning side in the same year. As such, Walker has a strong commitment to the club and will be doing everything in his power to help them on their journey.
