MATCH PREVIEW: Chesterfield

WHO ARE THE SHOTS PLAYING?

The Shots return to action at the EBB looking to make it four unbeaten at home to kick off the 2023/24 season. Last weekend’s victory against Wealdstone added to a start which has seen Shots pick up 7/9 points at the EBB this season, however it will be a real test against official odds on favourites for the National League title Chesterfield.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS?

The previous meeting between the sides came at the EBB on Valentines Day this year, with Jake Hutchinson giving the Shots fans who made the Tuesday trip a 1-0 lead to cheer, before Paul McCallum pulled the visitors level, leaving the game at 1-1 after 90 minutes. Liam Mandeville was the only scorer in a 1-0 victory for Chesterfield earlier in the season.

HOW DID THEY DO LAST SEASON?

Chesterfield came very close to promotion from the National League last season, finishing third in the regular season before beating Bromley to set up a Wembley date with Notts County in the playoff final. However, it was Notts County who secured promotion to the Football League at Wembley.

The side almost pulled off a historic victory over Championship side West Brom in the FA Cup, going 3-2 up before the break and being forced into a replay by a Brandon Thomas-Asante 93rd minute equaliser. West Brom were more ruthless in the replay at the Hawthorns, beating Chesterfield 4-0. The FA Trophy was one to forget for Chesterfield, being knocked out 3-1 at home to Coalville Town.

23/24 SO FAR:

Chesterfield are just a point off National League leaders Solihull Moors after six games, going four unbeaten to start the season, winning against Dorking, Fylde and Oxford as well as drawing against Oldham. Their unbeaten start ended against one of the leagues only remaining unbeaten sides Altrincham, but the Spireites returned to winning ways against Hartlepool on bank holiday Monday.
