Two of Europe’s biggest clubs grace the EBB Stadium tonight, Friday 26 January, as their Academies compete in the Premier League International Cup.
Kick-off is 7.05pm as Bayern Munich and FC Porto meet in a Group E clash in the tournament featuring the Academies of 12 English teams and 12 elite sides from across Europe. Admission is just £3 for adults and £1 for concessions.
Bayern have already beaten Reading in their only group game so far, whilst FC Porto have also beaten The Royals but lost to current group leaders Arsenal.
Bayern’s team may feature up to 10 players with experience of the first-team squad, including 18 year-old striker Manuel Wintzheimer, named in their UEFA Champions League squad and hailed as ‘the next Robert Lewandowski’ and 19 year-old midfielder Fabian Benko, praised as a future star by Pep Guardiola during his time as manager at the Allianz Arena.
Likewise, FC Porto’s B squad features an array of youth internationals, including four players named in the Team of the Tournament at the 2017 UEFA Under 19 Championships, in which Portugal lost to England in the Final. Defender Diogo Dalot is reportedly a target for both Real Madrid and Barcelona, whilst winger Wenderson Galeno is considered one of Brazil’s best young players.
The 24 teams in the 2017-18 Premier League International Cup are: Sparta Prague, Liverpool, Newcastle United, PSV Eindhoven (Group A); Hertha Berlin, Legia Warsaw, Leicester City, Sunderland (Group B); Derby County, GNK Dinamo Zagreb, Everton, VfL Wolfsburg (Group C); Athletic Club Bilbao, Celtic FC, Manchester United, Swansea City (Group D); Arsenal, FC Bayern Munich, FC Porto, Reading (Group E); and SL Benfica, Tottenham Hotspur, Villarreal CF, West Ham United (Group F).
