Joe is primarily a right back, but he can also play at centre back and in central midfield. He came through the youth system at hometown club Portsmouth, but was released in March 2008 without signing pro forms or making a senior appearance. To retain fitness, he joined Conference South club Bognor Regis Town where, having made his senior debut against Weston-Super-Mare, he performed superbly in two more games at the end of the 2007-08 season as the Rocks staved-off relegation. Joe signed for Queen’s Park Rangers in the summer of 2008; this move came about via the “exit trials” system and the Rs reportedly beat off competition from a dozen other clubs (among them Glasgow Rangers, Southampton and Hull City), whilst former England manager Glenn Hoddle wanted him to join his academy in Spain.

Having captained QPR’s reserves in 2008-09, he spent the first half of the 2009-10 season on loan at administration-stricken Conference Premier side Salisbury City (along with Rs team-mate Lee Brown), collecting six yellow cards in his 11 appearances. He was sidelined for a while in the November with suspected swine flu. In late April 2010, Joe made his Football League debut as a second half substitute for QPR in a Championship fixture against Watford; his only other appearance for the West Londoners was from the bench in the League Cup first round defeat to League 2 side Port Vale at Loftus Road in August 2010. In early October, he joined Torquay United on an initial three-month loan, which was eventually extended until the end of the season.

He went on to make 19 starts and 12 substitute appearances as the Gulls finished seventh in League 2 and was a playing substitute in both legs of the play-off semi-final victory over Shrewsbury Town before playing on the same basis in the defeat to Stevenage in the Old Trafford-staged final. Joe was released by QPR in the summer of 2011 and returned to Torquay on a permanent basis. He missed a solitary League 2 fixture out of the 52 games that the Gulls played in all competitions in 2011-12; they finished fifth in the league before losing out to Cheltenham Town in the play-off semi-finals.

He made a further 40 league and cup appearances in 2012-13 and was released at the end of the season before joining Aldershot Town (newly-relegated from the Football League and fresh out of administration). Joe scored on his Shots debut at Grimsby Town on the opening day of the 2013-14 Conference Premier season and his early season form saw him called-up to the England “C” squad for game against Latvia Under-23s.
